Communications
The Uniform Patrol Division is also responsible for the Communications Section. This section, more commonly known as Dispatch,
receives all calls for service and 911 calls for Greenville County. The Communications Section serves as a lifeline for deputies on the street by providing updated
information on calls for service.
The Communications Section processed 718,503 phone calls through dispatch with
200,962 of those being 911 emergency calls. A major source of these calls came
during the December ice storm. In that twenty-four hour period dispatch received
almost 6,500 calls due to power outages, fallen trees and other problems.
The False Alarm Reduction Unit was
established in 2001, after County Council enacted Ordinance 3354. This ordinance
requires all alarms in Greenville County to be registered with the Sheriff’s
Office. The purpose of this is to have accurate contact information when an
alarm is received by dispatch. The ordinance also requires those who have more
than two false alarms in one quarter to pay a fine to the county.
Since the ordinance came into effect,
the Sheriff’s Office has seen a dramatic decrease in the number of false alarms
received. In 2005 we saw a decrease of almost 2,000 false alarms from 2004. This
allows deputies to be available to respond to calls that require their
assistance.
