DEPUTY I (Non-Certified)

(Less than 1 year of experience with or without state certification,
annual salary shown based on an 85.75 hour pay period with overtime included on a Uniform Patrol schedule)

South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy: Once employed as a Deputy Sheriff, you will attend the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia for 8 weeks, the first 4 weeks of training will be completed at the Sheriff's Office.

SALARY:       $20.74/Hr with a HS diploma or GED

DEPUTY II (Certified)

Pay Incentives: Deputy I & II

  • Experience incentive will be based upon years of service
  • Bi-Lingual (Spanish) 5% over starting pay
  • Associate's Degree (Law Enforcement Related) 5% over starting pay
  • Bachelor's Degree (Law Enforcement Related) 10% over starting pay
  • Master's Degree (Law Enforcement Related) 15% over starting pay

Note: Maximum of 20% with a combination of Master's Degree and Bi-Lingual (Spanish)

South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy: Certified officers from other states may qualify for a two week special basic class presented through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. 

Overtime Pay: Any hours worked in excess of 80 hours (bi-weekly) is compensated at a rate of time and a half.

Holiday Pay: Any hours worked during one of the 11 scheduled paid county holidays is compensated at a rate of time and a half. In addition, you will be compensated for the 8 hours of scheduled holiday pay.

  •      State law enforcement retirement at 27 years service.
  •      Annual leave is accrued per pay period (accrual rate depends on years of service).
  •      Sick leave is accrued per pay period.
  •      Workers' Compensation.
  •      Up to $1,500 tuition reimbursement for continuing education per year.
  •      Take home car program after successful completion of Field Training Program.

 Applicants Must:

  1. Be of good moral character.
  2. At least 21 years of age.
  3. A SC resident when commissioned.
  4. A US citizen.
  5. Able to successfully complete a medical examination, physical abilities test, psychological assessment, drug screening, and background investigation.
  6. Able to successfully complete the required 12 week training program administered through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  7. Have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  8. Have a valid SC driver's license.
  9. Have a good driving record.
  10. Have a clean criminal history.
  11. Have a satisfactory credit history.
  12. Must not have a Bad Conduct Discharge or Dishonorable Discharge from the military (if applicable).

Note: Applications will not be accepted for applicants who have experimented with illegal hard drugs within 5 years of the application date or 1 year for marijuana. Applicants must not have been convicted of a DUI within 5 years of the application date.

CLASS 3 DEPUTY

(Non-Certified: Less than 1 year of experience with or without state certification, annual salary shown based on an 80 hour pay period)

SALARY:       $19.30/Hr with a HS diploma or GED
                          ($40,158 per year)
                   $20.27/Hr with an Associate's Degree in a law enforcement related field
                          ($42,166 per year)
                   $21.23/Hr with a Bachelor's Degree in a law enforcement related field
                          ($44,174 per year)
                   $22.20/Hr with a Master's Degree in a law enforcement related field
                          ($46,182 per year)

Pay Scale Prior Experience Non-GCSO

Pay Scale Prior Experience with GCSO

Applicants must meet the same listed criteria as a Deputy I or Deputy II. The hiring process, pay incentives, and benefits (with the exception of a take home car and the ability to work side jobs) are the same as Deputy I and Deputy II positions. (See above)

Duty assignments for Class 3 deputies include front desk duty, court security, and/or prisoner transport.
