CALEA Re-Accreditation for the GCSO.
In 1988, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office became the first law enforcement agency in South
Carolina to become nationally accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement
Agencies (CALEA). The reasons for becoming a nationally accredited agency are numerous; however
some of the major reasons are to develop and maintain a set of recognized policies and procedures for
deputies to follow, ensure that our practices are nationally accepted, and to provide more professional
law enforcement services to the community.
Since 1988, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office has continued to maintain its accredited status which
requires that independent and outside people review the operations ofthe agency once every three years.
Two law enforcement officers, one from Florida and the other from Ohio, came to Greenville on April
10th 2010 for the Sheriffs Office 7th reaccreditation. This onsite inspection demonstrated that the
Sheriff's Office policies and procedures meet national standards and are being adhered to.
The review was completed on April 13th 2010 and the findings were submitted to the CALEA committee
for final review. On July 31st 2010, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office received their 7th
reaccreditation award at a conference in Las Vegas and, for the first time, was also named a Flagship
Agency for CALEA. A "Flagship Agency" status means that the Sheriff's Office has demonstrated
continued success in the accreditation process and that we serve as an example for other agencies to
follow. The commissioners based their decision on past awards, the current assessment, and the overall
standing in the law enforcement community. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office was one of only
twenty agencies to receive this status at this years conference.
